QUICK THOUGHTS FROM CATCH UP TIME

Now back properly, to discover that last week's Full Council voted by just 21 votes to 2 to endorse the new Chief Executive appointment, with 2 abstentions. That means just 44% of the 48-member IW Council put their vote to this appointment. Hmmmmmmm.......

Also that the village of Carisbrooke is involved in some sort of land-grabbing after its failed bid to be a separate parish council to Newport. Road-users will now learn that the whole of Gunville is now part of Carisbrooke, after the erection of numerous 'Carisbrooke' signs......

My first night back on Tuesday saw me at the Planning Committee for the first time in 8 months for two Pan applications. I managed to help persuade the committee to reject the officers' recommendations for refusal of one application in rural Pan, but entirely failed to persuade them that the new community Multi Use Games Area for the rear of Downside School should be open to 9.30pm seven days per week. Instead it will have to close at 6pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. They obviously know better than the people who work with the community............

Wait a minute - 21 for, 2 against and 2 abstentions out of 48 so what did the other 24 vote ?

The other 23 - including me - were presumably missing. I was away on a pre-planned break; was it perhaps the most popular holiday week in Council history ????

No conspiracy Geoff, lots of people away this time of year. Besides, if this was the man the leadership wanted they'd have him whoever turned up to vote.

Welcome back. Glad you missed the pathetic public sector strike. Now isn't the time for those enjoying the security of public sector pay and security to strike for more.

My prediction is half a million or more in the private sector will be unemployed by the end of 2008 thanks to the failure of Gordon and Labour to react to the economic meltdown. We need government action yet they act like they're caught in the headlights, Gordon's dithering. Oh and don't give us the low pay argument, there are many in the private sector on low wages too, they won't even see 2% this year in shops and factories.

I agree with anonymous at 10.07, it looks like we're in for a whole lot of trouble with the unions until we can get rid of this sorry bunch at Westminster.
