THE USUAL LACK OF RESPECT

Got back from a working visit to Glasgow last night - much warmer than here !

The latest Forward Plan of planned Cabinet/Council decisions arrived today and indicated that a 'Final Report of the Undercliff Investigation' will go to Full Council on 12 December.

Fine you think - until you realise that there is no Full Council scheduled for December. No one has shown backbench councillors like me the respect of telling me there will be a meeting then. Nothing changes.

You are right of course, it is very disrespectful to issue notices of important meetings without having the decency to inform all elected members. I was an IWC member many years ago, in my day they routinely issued papers for meetings the night before. No chance to read and form an opinion. Nothing changes, they wonder why the people are not interested. Embarass them Geoff.

Embarass them? I doubt it. This lot are so firmly in control and have such thick skins that they think they can get away with anything.

And whose fault is that? The islands Libs were wiped out last time, Labout can't put up enough candidates. None of this can be good for democracy?

Totally agree. I would love to see Labour with candidates in all wards, but the best we did in recent years was back in 1998 with 28 out of 48. 2005 was just 18. Our problem is that so many of our members are employed by the Council and are, hence, banned from standing. Or are of working age and don't have private means to help them offset loss of earnings. Maybe 2009 will see a full complement !
