TENT PHILOSOPHY

US President Johnson said in the 1960s of his critics, "Better to have them in the tent pi**ing out, than on the outside pi**ing in".

Clearly this philosophy still holds sway with regard to the Council's relationship with the local media. I learnt today from a number of people - having been told originally in strictest secrecy - that they have recruited a senior journalist from what the Leader was calling the 'County Depresser' until only recently.

Better start carrying an umbrella.........

I suppose the journalist has been recruited to write the Chief's blog for him, since he has not been able to keep it updated himself.
Perhaps the journalist will also be able to think up some original lines, instead of copying decades-old phrases from Private Eye and then accusing PE of copying from him. Trebles all round!

Geoff, when you were told about this recruitment in "strictest secrecy", were you told how this journalist is going to (a) improve council services or (b) save taxpayers' money?
Otherwise it looks as if s/he has been recruited just to score a point over the newspaper that is perceived to have been critical of the Council. Surely not?

If that means improving relations between the council and the CP then it's got to be good. It may be fun to read reports of trouble at County Hall each week but wouldn't it be better if there was a bit more honest exchange of information? Perhaps recruiting a real live journalist and not just a spin doctor is a sign of a desire for improvement.

I won't be too cynical until I see the results. Oh, and is it true that John Wortham will be standing in as Leader whilst Cllr Sutton is indisposed?

They already have "real live journalists" working in the Communications section.

Re the Chief Executive's blog. Do we really pay £150,000 for someone to write about little but a gossip column in the local paper. The man is obsessed! Which must rather please the columnist I imagine...
