And now of course, we will be told that closing good local schools and bussing kids around the Island will improve educational standards.
We'll have two-tier schools like Portsmouth and Southampton - oh, just a minute, they are next on the list!

Interestingly Steve Beynon's last two LAs before the Island were Luton and Thurrock!

Do we know if all the Island schools received their results (given the mix-ups with marking this year)?

I don't Wendy. I only know that my local middle school has theirs.

What a shame. Like others, I blame the parents. Too many islanders have very low expectations. Kids are just not supported. This is very demoralising for our teachers and support staff, the island should be ashamed. Al of us, those who could help and don't.

interesting that the local media seem not to have picked up on this. I wonder why ?

I just looked at the full tables for the regions, also in the Guardian (on August 5), and am a bit puzzled. It shows the 2008 Isle of Wight KS2 figures for level 4 or above as English 73%; Maths 72%; Science 86% (compared to England averages of 80;78;88). I'm not sure how they calculated the combined figure of 48%.

Nor me. But I assume they know what they are doing ! I have asked for IWC comment.

Perhaps it's the cumulative figure, i.e. those achieving level 4 in ALL THREE subjects.
73% x 72% x 86% = 45%.
Not quite the exact number I know, but there may be some degree of weighting applied - one would have to look into the detail.
