ELECTED UNOPPOSED TO PARISH COUNCIL

Well the nominations deadline for the new parish council elections came and went yesterday, and Tony Coburn (pictured) and I were elected unopposed to represent Pan on Newport Town Council for the next two years. This is the only uncontested ward in Newport and I hope it shows that we both have done pretty well for Pan over the years. 14 years between us at County Hall.

We decided along with our Labour colleagues in the rest of Newport not to stand on political labels for these parish elections. The Tories haven't either - though one Newport Tory activist had had the cheek to label himself as an 'independent'; shame on you Mr P! - but the Liberals have decided to do so. That's a pity as the TMC has not been a party political body over the last 2 years, even with me as Chair, and it seems to run contrary to what Liberal members of the TMC have been saying.

Of course this has given us an opportunity to see how weak the Liberals are in Newport currently with just three of their five candidates living in Newport, and three of their candidates hedging their bets until Wednesday as to where they intend to stand; where do they have more chance of being forgiven ! Particularly when one is the former Liberal leader of the IW Council......

All this talk of elections turns the mind to the next Council elections that are now getting ever closer.
There will be a huge number of disappointed and/or angry voters switching sides in all directions.
It's going to be a very 'interesting' year (in the chinese sense)

Do I remember the Liberals only just being beaten by the Conservatives in the recent Newport North election or am I like you Geoff suffering from selective memory loss.

Typical Liberal ! Only one of you can have selective memory loss. Its a result of Liberals always trying to be all things to all people ......

I hate Liberals. Mostly for that reason. Yesterday a relative gave me a mock newspaper printed by and featuring heavily former acting Lib Leader Dr Vincent Cable - astonishingly in this propaganda rag no mention was made of his being a Liberal!

Not all bad thou, at least he didn't feel the need to share with us his number of former sexual partners or past drug habits.

This is not the first time the Tories have put someone up for the parish council as an independent,Geoff.
Rebecca McGregor,Alan's Wells' daughter, stood and won a seat down in Cowes as an independent.

Cllr. Geoff Lumley said...

Just because she is his daughter doesn't make her a card-carrying Tory! However, Mr P is a shamelessly partisan Tory activist, who clearly has no shame whatsoever, and will undoubtedly be exposed unless he removes that 'Independent'label.....
